Fit for Duty Exams

WorkSTEPS fit for duty consulting can help you develop policies and procedures designed to expedite safe return-to-work programming through functional testing.

As an employer you want to be sure all your employees are medically and physically-capable of performing the essential functions of their job, and that they’re legally compliant with their job’s regulatory requirements. This is particularly critical for employers in highly-regulated and/or high-risk industries. WorkSTEPS Fit for Duty exams, will help you establish a culture of health and safety in which your injured employees get back to work safely and efficiently.

Functional Return-to-Work Fit for Duty Exam

Before an employee returns to work following an injury, illness, surgery, or extended absence, you want to assess their ability to return to their old position and safely perform the essential functions of their job. WorkSTEPS functional return-to-work Fit for Duty testing is scientific and objective, and focuses only on the injured part(s) of the body used in essential job-specific tasks. Outcomes from WorkSTEPS Fit for Duty evaluations will help determine next steps, which may include the employee returning to their job, returning to a different job temporarily, and/or undergoing additional rehabilitation.

Fit for Duty exams can:

  • Decrease work related injuries that can occur when an employee returns to a job before they’re physically capable of performing its essential functions
  • Decrease accident rates
  • Lower workers’ compensation costs
  • Decrease disruption to production when skilled workers become disabled due to re-injury

Our Fit for Duty evaluations can be used as a stand-alone service or paired with WorkSTEPS Post-Offer Functional Employment Testing to compare baseline data with data collected during the Fit for Duty evaluation so you can more effectively manage your employee’s recovery. Additionally, our Fit for Duty evaluations can be combined with our Transitional Duty Programs and WorkSTEPS DataHUB™ so we can more comprehensively work with you to manage your employees’ recovery and return.

Ensure Employees Keep Meeting Physical Demand Requirements

This non-medical agility testing may be used preventatively and may be administered periodically to ensure that existing employees continue to be able to meet the physical demand criteria necessary to safely perform the essential functions of the job. Employers may request this type of agility testing for all employees in a particular job class as part of their periodic monitoring to ensure that employees remain capable of performing physically demanding job tasks. This test is periodically administered on employees in positions affecting public safety, such as firefighters and police officers, or as a re-certification requirement.

“On average, one in fourteen assessments result in a “not capable” determination, saving potential employers an estimated $38,000, on average, for each such determination."

Post-Employment Physical Agility Testing

Our rigorous testing process is administered by our trained and certified network of more than 1,400 healthcare professionals nationwide, which ensures quality and consistency of our testing methods. Our trained healthcare professionals cumulatively perform thousands of tests each week. Post Offer Employment Testing with WorkSTEPS gives employers confidence they’ve reduced the chance of injuries and improved workplace safety.
