When and why was WorkSTEPS started?

Larry Feeler:

Well, I started WorkSTEPS in 1986. I was a physical therapist working at the hospital in Odessa and my dad owned a pipeline construction company, and he was experienced so many injuries, and at that time lawyers weren't involved in workers' comp. So he settled in most of his clients for a very expensive amount of money. So he came to me and said, what can we do to solve this problem? And I said, there's two things you're missing. One is you've got to test your employees before you hire them to find out what kind of preexisting medical conditions they have to make sure they're safe to do their job. And second, you need a test them to be able to do their essential functions. So just matching people to their jobs made a huge difference in reducing injuries and limiting his liability as far as injury claims.
